Is sight our most precious sense? According to the American Eye-Q Survey conducted by the American Optometric Association, many people think it is.

In fact, nearly half of the respondents answered it was their ability to see that they feared losing most (47%) – nearly four times as much as those who responded that they feared losing their ability to walk (12%).

Sight is precious, and once it is lost, even partially lost, it may be impossible to recover.

Vision is endangered by many things, but some of the most prevalent causes of vision loss are diseases of the eye. Eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and others threaten the sight of thousands of Americans each year.

Optometrists are eye doctors trained in diagnosing and treating eye diseases. Regular comprehensive eye exams are key to early detection and treatment of these sight-threatening diseases. Early detection and treatment offer the best hope of preserving the sight that remains.
